The word GREEN has a whole new meaning now. It's about cutting our consumption to save our natural resources, our air and water and for general climate change control measures. Its a good thing to be conscious of your consumerism. Being a green person is being a good citizen. So what does being green mean?

It means giving your money to people who use earth friendly products and methods of production and who also recycle. It means you recycle in your home and office. If your town or city has no such plan, then get on board and pressure your town council to create one. Make sure your school system is teaching your kids about recycling and smart consumption.

There's also money in this movement. New industry which will create new jobs along with new ways of doing things. Leaving a smaller footprint is our goal. I love those documentaries where they find ancient civilizations whose cities are overgrown with greenery. Mother Earth will always reclaim her space and we are merely guests upon her shoulders. Do you even think about the Earth?

She grows our crops in her soil so we have food. Her skies drop water on us for those plants and our own drinking water. We fish her waters for food, graze cattle on her land, and if not for her, we would perish. And how do we treat her?

Too many of us drop trash everywhere; dig up her minerals and leave toxic gapping holes in her; dump chemicals into her waters and soil; spew poisons from our transportation equipment into the air which her winds and rains can no longer repair.

It's estimated that in the time of Jesus there were about 100,000 of us on the planet. Today there are 6,500,000,000 of us - eating, drinking, driving, shopping and dying. How much can one planet take before she rebels? I like the image of us as the fleas on the dog, and the dog is scratching like mad.

ZERO population growth is a big issue no one wants to discuss. We just cannot keep multiplying at the rate we are. Stop talking about abortion and start talking about birth control. Tax credits for NO children. Social stigma's for having more than 2 children. We need a few generations of only Childs. Want more? Adopt. Do you want more kids or just YOUR kids?

SHOPPING
Buy only what you need. Go to a garage sale if you can't shake the habit - better still have your own.

HOUSEHOLD
It's a perfect time to clean your house from top to bottom. Closets, under the bed, garages, attics and basements. Get rid of the clutter. The Japanese ZEN idea is that if you have a home filled with clutter there is no room for new things to enter your domain. Make room for the new.

CONSERVING
Re-use those plastic baggies; talk to your local recycler about ways you can volunteer to get people to recycle. Stop throwing stuff away without a thought. Where will it end up when it is taken away from your home? Will your grand kids have to deal with it someday?

SOCIETY
We all want the same thing, no matter what your race, religion or color. A safe home, money for the basics, time for relaxation and entertainment and the hope of a better future for your kids. There is no us and them. We're all in this together. Take a step to make it happen in your world.
